Purpose

Throughout the applied research and innovation process, we prioritize diverse participation over consultation, and collaborative partnerships over solo authorship. We invite mission-driven practitioners, researchers, funders, policymakers, technologists, and those most affected by the work — often those furthest from power or access — to help shape the process, content, and outcomes. Expertise takes many forms, and no single perspective can see the whole picture or act on it alone.

Change is the only constant mission-driven work can count on — in the people we serve, the resources we have, the technology we use, and the field itself. We meet that constancy with reflection, not resistance: continually examining our own assumptions, staying present to what actually exists today, and remaining open to what could exist tomorrow. When the world we’re working in shifts, we choose to imagine a new approach over defending an old one simply because it’s familiar.

When determining how to measure impact, we center data on what those most affected by the work say about their own lives — what matters to them and how they feel. Well-being is a deeply human, contextual, and evolving experience. Understanding and responding to it meaningfully is rarely easy; and we resist substituting what’s most available, quickest to collect, or simplest to report to the detriment of authentic representation.

Applied research and innovation is a cycle, not a single pass. We ethically examine its processes, tools, and artifacts in contained use-cases, iterating toward what works. Before releasing or scaling, we ask those most affected by the work – did you help shape it, can you see yourselves in it, and are you able to benefit from it? Then, we ask ourselves – what would it take to responsibly extend the work further, including potential unintended consequences, such as whom it could exclude, misrepresent, or expose? A process, tool, or artifact that works for most isn’t finished if it fails or creates new risk for the people it was meant to serve first.

Once a process, tool, or artifact earns its way out of a contained use-case, the goal shifts from working once to lasting long. We choose to build for durability and reach together — information and tools designed to be adopted, adapted, and carried forward by the mission-driven efforts and communities who need them — fueling the nimble and responsive work and resources that it takes to advance human flourishing, not just short-term relief or reward.

Trust runs through everything we build together — collaborative partnerships, applied research, and technology alike. We hold each to the same standard: transparency, consent, privacy, accountability, freedom from harm, and independence of truth. These are guardrails we begin building from the start and collectively refine as relationships evolve. When convenience or power conflicts with trust, we choose trust every time.
